Ingrebourne Hill

Rainham Road, Rainham. RM13 8ST.

Ingrebourne Hill is one of the closest green spaces to home and is frequently my first port of call when setting off on a run. As part of the Thames Chase group of local parks operated by the Forestry Commission it is fairly basic as far as visitor facilities go, but has plenty of space and a wide compacted gravel path which runs around its perimeter. There are also a growing number of on-foot only pathways that criss-cross the main path.

For those looking to test themselves, the south-eastern corner of the park has a short but steep hill which takes you to a large stone viewpoint with 360 degree views across Havering, into London and out along the Thames estuary.

The park links up directly with Hornchurch Country Park.

If (like me) you're also partial to a spot of mountain biking there is a dedicated mini-trail with climbs, berms, switchbacks and jumps. This is free to use and doesn't get busy. The gravel surface can be a little loose but start slowly and you'll soon build up confidence.

Parks and Pavements is the brainchild of Paul Robinson - a recreational runner from the outskirts of London with a deep love of the great outdoors and adventures of the human-powered variety. Inspired by other people's tales of running, scooting, cycling, kayaking and swimming around our glorious island (and beyond) he hopes to inspire other suburban runners to seek out their local pockets of green space and discover the nature in their neighbourhood.
