Switching running app

When I started running I used Nike+ tracking gadgets and phone app, and was loyal to this system for many years. However, when the app was given a major overhaul in 2016 many users (myself included) thought it had taken a step backwards; a lot of the 'fun' challenges and functions were stripped back and the supporting website was less interactive than before.

In the autumn, after looking at a number of alternatives, I made the decision to switch allegiance to Strava and using a 3rd party app I exported all of my old run data to the new platform. Initially I felt that it was a bit too 'serious' and performance orientated, although as time has passed the team has added greater photo and social sharing to the system which I like a lot. Their challenges are a little on the bland side compared to Nike and Fitbit but it seems to have a bigger slice of the market in the UK and it was nice to actually have friends who use it (whereas I was among strangers on Nike+).

Several months down the line and I'm pretty used to the app and website now. I like the segments function, although I rarely hold top spot for long! The developers seem to be adding more and more functionality to the system (the safety 'beacon' option in Pro mode is a great innovation) so it's good to know that they're not content to just sit back and rest on their laurels.

Parks and Pavements is the brainchild of Paul Robinson - a recreational runner from the outskirts of London with a deep love of the great outdoors and adventures of the human-powered variety. Inspired by other people's tales of running, scooting, cycling, kayaking and swimming around our glorious island (and beyond) he hopes to inspire other suburban runners to seek out their local pockets of green space and discover the nature in their neighbourhood.
